Hopefully in the actual event the boards will be the right way round!

Probably didn't matter at the time of the picture!

According to chess-results, there are 30 entrants, ranging from 2161 down to 1180 plus unrated players.

There are 6, if I counted correctly, current and former Olympiad players in the field.

That link doesn't work any more. They've now replaced it with another, which has a picture with a very unusual board! - https://www.englishchess.org.uk/watch-t ... ship-live/

That is a detail from here, where it can be seen that the board is 8 squares by 9 squares (maybe more, as the edge is not visible)! To be fair, just colour in the edge by the Black player's elbow and it would be OK.

English Women's Championship 2018

Post by Alex Longson » Sat Sep 01, 2018 10:48 am

The English Women’s Championship 2018 is underway at the St John Hotel in Solihull. This is the third year of the event with previous winners Kanwal Bhatia (2016) and Louise Head (2017) both present. It is a five round swiss with a time control of 90 minutes for the whole game plus 30 second increments.

https://www.englishchess.org.uk/english ... ips-2018/
http://chess-results.com/tnr374829.aspx?lan=1
https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-tourn ... 018/2/1/1

The event is much larger this year which is great to see. 30 players are competing compared to 6 in 2016 and 11 in 2017. The organisers should be congratulated on this increase and the comfortable playing conditions at St John’s with most of the games being broadcast live on chess 24. Total prize fund is £2,000 and the winner gets a confirmed slot in the English women’s team in the 2019 European Championship.

The spread of the field is quite interesting. 3 of the top 10 are playing and 10 of the top 30. There is a good representation of younger players also.

Round 1

Four players took a half point bye though none of the top seeds. All game were decisive (a refreshing change from the recent Sinquefield Cup) and no upsets really occurred.

Defending champion Louise Head was actually on the ropes somewhat in the opening against her young opponent Elizaveta Sheremetyeva who missed a thematic opportunity on move 17. After this Louise showed good technique to grind out a long win.

17.f5 gxf5 18.Nxf5 is an excellent thematic piece sacrifice

Sarah Longson caught her opponent with a nice tactic on move 23 after a trendy Italian opening suddenly went horribly wrong for Agnieszka Sapkowska (Executive Assistant for Chess in Schools).

After 22...Qd7?? - white to play and win

Another promising junior Anum Sheikh essayed the interesting and rare 8.h4 in the Miezes Scotch – more alert readers than me may be able to point out which high level game this was seen in recently but I’m pretty certain it involved Nakamura. Anyway, Sheila Jackson was not phased and was always somewhat better in the endgame.

8.h4!? - an interesting new development in the Miezes

Kanwal Bhatia – Kate Walker saw black grab a very hot pawn out of an Caro Kann Panov (transposed to an Alapin Sicilian also) – so hot in fact that white is immediately winning with a huge attack on the black king.

After 8...Nxd4?? 9.Nxd4 Bxe2 10.Qxe2 Qxd4 11.Be3 white's initiative is already winning

Julie Denning – Helen Frostick saw a speculative sacrifice by black which paid off after white failed to play the natural 17.g3 – after which Helen crashed through quickly.

17.g3 repels the attack- but after 17.Nf4? black was clearly better and won quickly

Ingrid Lauterbach and Natasha Regan both used closed openings to outplay the extremely young (and talented) Dicen sisters Imogen and Elis.

Susie Wang – Zoe Varney started out as a quiet Berlin, but white played quite passively and black took over the initiative eventually converting a heavy piece endgame.

23 b4! wins for Longson doesn't it - as you say, pretty (and not *that* easy to see the longest winning line after 23...ab4 24 ab4 Nb4)
