Also world junior champion 2003. All in pretty impressive, except maybe by the standards of her predecessors as the Georgian number one woman

Admittedly I did not know all of that, so thank you, but we probably guessed already that she was good! Does anyone know anything remotely personal about her? Perhaps she is the only East European contender not to have married a male GM? something like that.

That comment (about marrying male GMs) doesn't come across too well, Jonathan...

You protest too much. There is nothing wrong or discreditable with marrying GMs (well, some GMs....) and many of the top East European women seem to have done so. In a light hearted way one might say that those who haven't do stand out. If research proves me wrong, so be it ...

Nor am I asking for any personal revelations. Just anything at all. The same goes for all the competitors, but it is natural to ask about the leader.

Marrying one of the GMs who have consistently defeated her might help her improve and break through the 2600 barrier.

She (2484) defeated Nepo (2492) with the white pieces in the 2004 World U-18 Ch. held in Heraklion.

At that event she did exactly the same to Lawrence Trent (2390).

And, the same again, in 2013 at Gib. Dzagnidze,N (2555) v. Trent,L (2429).

They'll need to play her again if they want to improve their marriage chances.

It might be better to see how she's fared in the past against her rivals in this event.

(She's played all the other competitors, apart from Tan, a lot and seems to have given about as good as she got.)

It would be interesting to see that research. I was concerned at the implication that a statistically significant proportion of those that are doing well had married a male GM, and the implication that there might be some cause and effect there (i.e. if you want to improve your chess, form a relationship with someone stronger than you at chess). More likely, of course, is that people who enjoy the same pastime/sport/career get together, and the existing disproportion carries over.

Maybe marrying someone worse than you at chess has the opposite effect!

On a semi-related note, maybe looking at the effect of same-sex partnerships isn't the right direction to take this thread in...

There might be a cause and effect and that would be interesting. Although come to think of it, I am not aware of any past world champion with a GM partner. But I certainly didn't mean to imply that anyone deliberately hooked an elite GM into marriage for career advancement, no!

Assuming we are discussing two competitive chess playing partners, maybe and that would be interesting too. Grishuck seems unaffected. I believe that Shirov has written quite a bit on his marriages but I haven't read any of it - has anyone here?

Incidentally Tan's defence of that ending looked pretty bad, and the game can be added to the list of those which could not be mistaken for an elite level game.

Not that it was a trivial defence. Keith, give away your trade secrets for nothing - how should Black plan to defend from move 28 ?
