"Round 2:

Arlette van Weersel (1) v Fiona Steil-Antoni (1)
Sarah Hegarty (1) v Amy Hoare (0.5)
Rasa Norinkeviciute (0.5) v Shannon Oliver (1)
Susan Lalic (0) v Maria Ikonomopoulou (0)
Natasha Fairley (0) v Lateefah Messam-Sparks (0)"

Slightly odd, but that's not far from what the Swiss pairing would be! (I haven't checked the ratings.)

Scorewise It is a bit ironic, i think the swiss pairings (depending on if we float the top or the middle) would be arlette v sarah, shannon v fiona, rasa v maria, lateefah v amy & susan v natasha but I'm no expert

I came up with this pairing: Arlette v Sarah, Shannon v Fiona, Rasa v Maria, Susan v Amy, Lateefah v Natasha

The only difference being on the bottom two boards. You floated up the second and third seeded players on 0 of the four, I floated up the first and second. I'm not sure whether I'm right though. My thinking was that when you choose a float, you start at the middle and work either up or down, depending on whether you're looking for an upfloat or a downfloat. FIDE-rated tournaments of a certain length might have different rules though...

Any experts who can clarify that?

You float the highest ranked player(s) up, and the lowest ranked player(s) down assuming all other things (absolute criteria, colours etc) to be equal. So I get

Arlette v Sarah, Shannon v Fiona, Rasa v Maria, Susan v Amy, Lateefah v Natasha

So Alex gets the pairings right, but for the wrong reason :D [I think!]

I think I went through that thought process, but realised that it made no difference who got the floats, because you'd have two black-seekers playing one another regardless of who got the upfloat. I neglected that from my explanation...

Indeed. The different approach would make a difference in a larger (more players) event though because starting from the median would definitely get you the wrong float.

I could never be an arbiter - this stuff makes my head spin.

I thought it was a 10-player all-play-all?
