I wonder if having a women only section of the championship with say just 8 boards to start with and a proper trophy might be better - obviously a fairly limited number of entries initially but could perhaps work.
There are 73 women players graded over 130 according to the ECF grading data. Very few counties would be able to field an eight board team. Going back to my original point, players should be included in county teams based on merit irrespective of any other criteria. Nottinghamshire have won four national championships in the past five years; each winning team included a female player.
Yes fair point though I was thinking they would be the same counties who can field a competitive open team now.

Well - semi-finals tomorrow. Perhaps a count of female participants?

Well I know I have not got any female playing but I would not have a problem to pick a woman.

I did not asked certain people due to the following

How about changing the rules for drawn matches such that before board count is female count: the team with more female players wins a drawn match. If they have the same number of females then it is back to board count, etc. It is only a small change but there are quite a few drawn matches. And it could be applied to all sections, not just the open.

That does sound like a worthwhile idea which wouldn't immediately rule out a whole load of teams.

How about leaving the County Championships alone? I doubt that there is a single county captain who is not delighted to have a female player in the team whenever one be persuaded to play, and messing them about just so the ECF can look as though it is doing something is a solution to nothing.

I had a idea that the semi and finals should be played like the 4ncl in the open and minor section

The losing semi-finalists would go home after the first day?

You could do a 3rd/4th place play off? It just a idea with 12 boards

I think anything that involves overnight stays is going to act as a deterrent rather than encouragement.

Trying to hold all the finals in the same place is not worth it in my opinion (especially when the chosen venue is even more ludicrously unfair to teams from one of the unions than is usual.....). Can't see the point in eg Staffs and Notts going on a massive detour.

I was talking to David Tucker (Kent) the other day and he said he had proposed having the last 4 playing on a jamboree basis. The idea was rejected, but I thought it was an interesting idea. You would need more space of course.

Well over 300 players participated in the semi-finals. According to my count four were female and three of these competed in the U100 match between Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire.

.. And Basingstoke is still a 5 hour round trip from Ipswich.. a long day.
This brought a wry smile. Kettering is 250 miles and 5.5 hours from Plymouth on a summer Saturday. One way.

But with the travel times quoted above you should be staying overnight if you are driving. Apart from probably not being in the best state to play a good game of chess after a drive of that length, your driving is unlikely to be at its best on the way home.

My employer says that if I'm going to drive more than 200 miles in a day I shouldn't do more than a total of 10 hours work + driving time.

My employer wanted me to drive from Surrey to Stansted for a 6am flight to Berlin, have the meeting, fly back to arrive at Stansted at midnight, then drive back home. I thought he was wrong at the time...

Well we have to ask ourselves what is the point in playing in a competition where the final venue is so massively and obviously unfair it is going to be impossible to get a competitive team together.
