I understand the match was at Water Orton - not played there, what was the venue like?
Any postings on here represent my personal views

Typical church hall venue, I'd say. Worked well enough for our purposes; had the added bonuses (should they be needed) of being in a village with a railway station and being just over the road from some shops.

Not too bad, easy to get to and right in the centre of the village with decent parking a couple of minute walk away (at the station), directly opposite a Tesco and a Chippy, there were a couple of pubs as well

Room itself basic but spacious

That's a pretty Somerset decent team. Hopefully the half term holiday will decimate the team for the Semi-Final...

Does it count as a "missed" mate in 3, if the flag falls before the moves can be executed?

Depends on the exact circumstances, but the terminology hardly matters if those involved are too coy to supply the position. I've already emailed the ECF publicity officer (based in Somerset!) without reply.

I played in that match yesterday and I didn't quite see the final position but something like:

Black (Yorkshire): Qg1, Ne6, Kf3, f4
White (Somerset): Kh3, Nf5

I have to say this was the strongest Somerset team I have seen since I started playing for Somerset in 2005. it obviously helps when Matthew Turner and two of his Millfield Boys are playing who both won against their stronger opponents on board 6 and 15

Black was a queen up?? The position given is mate in one by Qh1.

You know Black was a queen up. It was stated earlier in the thread. That was the entire basis of the "fluke" victory (well that and the fact that white only had a Knight remaining to deliver mate).

The position given is mate in 4.

Ah, that explains it, I'd missed some of the posts on page 3 of the thread. But nobody has yet supplied the position with mate in 3.

In the excitement white's brilliant defence 1. Nh4+ Kf2 2. Ng2!!! was probably overlooked 8)

Without Nh4-g2+, mate in four, I see only mates in one or two, not three.

Well instead of Nh4-g2 (not check) 2. Nf5 is mate in three (and the best move if the aim is to avoid the Knight being captured for as long as possible!).

Not that i suspect the players were that bothered in getting to the 'truth' of the final position
