Who is the worst County Tart?

Dear all,

I was wondering if anyone can beat me? ... I have played for 6 counties in my days:

Worcs, GM, Middlesex, Herts, Bucks and Beds

Phil Makepeace runs me close with 5 and has youth on his side:

Bucks, Berks, Norfolk, Shropshire and Middlesex

Has anyone played for more?

Regards, John

You may get people who have played for more, or maybe who are eligible for more but never played. Six and five is pretty good. Records for longevity, such as playing for the same county for a span of 50 years or more, would be good as well, as there are almost certainly examples out there. I've played for Cambridgeshire in both Open and a graded section, and for Middlesex in a graded section and once or twice in the Open when they were short of players (that tends not to happen so much nowadays). I may have played for Surrey in a junior event when that sort of event was more common, but not sure if that counts.

John, if I’d known you had that sort of reputation I would never have asked you to play yesterday :D

PS - the early part of that list helps me to place your accent!

We were just fortunate that I remembered to take along my 'lucky' chess set yesterday

Hi Harry, gosh ... all three ... you are a brave man! :)

Are you the Harry Lamb I played a few times while I was at Uni in Manchester in the 1980's or his son?

Regards, John

I could be the Harry Lamb you played. Or I may be his father! My eldest son's full name is Harry Michael Lamb. He was originally known as Harry but must not have liked it so he changed it to Michael  when he was about 11. In the early 1980's he was still Harry. It could have been either of us but I guess it was most likely me. Michael is still playing chess. He captains one of Ealing's teams. When I was captain of Bolton's first team I got a bit grumpy because the lure of the capital was so great that he was putting out a stronger team of Bolton players than I was!
