An extraordinary mashing in the bottom half of both Open semi-finals.

Yorkshire clattered Surrey 7-1 without a ha'ppence of difference in the grades. Kent ran away 5.5-2.5 over Middlesex, albeit with slightly more margin there. It made all the difference in both cases.

Wonder if Kent or Yorkshire are favourites to win in the final? Also, was the tied U100 match 6-6 or were the two semis played with different numbers of boards? A large number of tied matches in the semis.

Also, while looking at how many counties got multiple teams to the final, I was wondering how common it is for all the trophies to be won by different counties?

Most likely the open final will be very close on paper at ~200 each.

The Yorkshire team in the final last year was very strong indeed mind, so a repeat might see them modest favourites. One thing for sure is that both counties have so many good players available that there definitely won't be any soft touches.

The top 16 not playing from Yorkshire yesterday could definitely compete with the 16 who did. Probably even slight favourites. Imagine its that way for most places of course :)

Essex 8.5-7.5 Somerset. My game was last to finish, thought we'd already lost the match, agreed a draw, turned out a win and we were through on board count. I hate chess.

Sounds a horrible experience. Collective team failure cf your knowing what you needed to do of course, but sometimes you do get entirely baffling collective mix ups like this :(

South Africa and Duckworth Lewis comes to mind.....

It was me and our board seven (I think that's the right board) left playing, knowing we needed 2 wins to win the match. Board 7 was a pawn down in a N +P ending, whilst I'd been struggling in a horrid position for virtually the entire afternoon. With not much time left on either of our boards our board 7 finished. I spoke to him, somehow thought I was told the match was over, and so assumed he had either lost or drawn (I entirely take the blame for mis- hearing both him and the person next to him).

In my game I was the exchange down, but with a fair amount of compensation in terms of activity. It was most likely winning for my opponent, but with his 50 secs or thereabouts to my minute left there was plenty of scope for the result to go any of the 3 ways. My opponent offered me a draw (I think we were both of the impression the match was over before our result. He said afterwards he didn't want to potentially go away with nothing having been clearly better all day, which is a fair point) and I instantly accepted.

We were both talking about the game afterwards, I was pretty happy that the match had been decided before out result and we didn't have to have a mad blitz with the match on the line. Then after a few minutes one of my team mates informed me of the correct match result. Oh....

Needless to say I was gutted.

Incidentally, Suffolk won, I think 12- 4, in the other semi from the Minor.

No need to beat yourself up. You got 0.5 more than you'd earned. A full point would have offended the Gods.

Finals:-

SCCU - 8 (5)
NCCU - 2 (2)
MCCU - 2 (5)
WECU - 1 (1)
EACU - 1 (1)

All the finals (with the exception of the U120 which is an all SCCU clash) is a SCCU team versus a team from another Union; Kent contest four of the seven finals. Last year's figures are in brackets; basically SCCU more successful at the expense of the MCCU - others pretty much as normal.

Finalists over the past five years are now SCCU 34; MCCU 16; NCCU 11; EACU 5 & WECU 4
Winners for the five years to 2014 are SCCU 17; MCCU 8; NCCU 4; EACU 3; WECU 3.

Going on these figures one might expect 4 SCCU and 1 MCCU wins in the finals with the other two titles shared between the remaining three Unions.

NCCU probably a little below baseline expectations, but that's only to be expected with Yorkshire fielding so few teams and that accident in the U160's.
(Also dropped lots of teams last season of course, no idea if we'll fix it going forwards.).
