"I'm surprised no-one has worked out a mechanism for playing telephone matches using current technology."
Telephone matches were played many years ago, using an arbiter at each venue, so it should be possible. Whether it's desirable is another matter.

Are you sure? I mean the extra 30-60 minutes of chess doesn't change a lot - you're losing the whole day anyway. I'd almost want to get the most I could to try and get a pay off for the (horrible!) travel.benedgell wrote: ↑Tue May 15, 2018 8:40 amTruro- Trowbridge= 3hrs+ each way, 350 mile round trip.
I'm guessing there were similar length journeys from parts of Surrey.
A 2pm start would've meant setting off 10.30/ 11am, getting home 9- 9.30pm at best.
I can't imagine there were many people there that wanted the chess to last an extra hour.

It might depend on how long the venue is available
How far did the Surrey players travel?

A long way, but that isn't really the point. I don't mind playing a quickish evening game after a full day doing something else. I do resent giving up an entire day to play a quickish game. It appears that I am committed to doing that again this Saturday, but it will be the last time.

The only thing 4hrs is quickish for is cricket.

Close run thing with Suffolk winning 8.7 - 7.5 despite Alan Merry losingNickFaulks wrote: ↑Mon May 14, 2018 10:18 amStill nothing on Suffolk - Warwickshire in the Minor Counties. Did it happen?

"How far did the Surrey players travel?"
I didn't play but it would have been 110 miles, just over 2 hours (in theory) for me, but I am next to a junction on M25, it would have been worse for others, but our Cornish friends would probably have had a tougher time.
One of the reasons I gave up county chess was that I had too many longish journeys to win on default or have really short games, one way or the other...

Only if they started at Land's End. We certainly met them more than halfway.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Wed May 16, 2018 11:05 ambut our Cornish friends would probably have had a tougher time.

Re: Preliminary & Quarter Final Results
Trowbridge seems an odd choice, surely something just off the M4 (even M5) would be better? There was a match in Mark (a couple of miles off M5) last year, which seemed to work, although Saturday is "change over day" and there can be huge numbers of caravans!

It was way further than Trowbridge, Taunton way. Convenient for M5.

Ah, was it Highbridge then? That makes more sense as Trowbridge is bigger but in the middle of nowhere, motorway-wise.

Re: Preliminary & Quarter Final Results
Well done Middlesex!! As far as I'm concerned, this result more than compensates for Surrey's disappointing result against a very good Warwickshire team.
