I love that things like this are put on the 'UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists'. This celebration is 3000 years old.

Lots of spellings as well: Norooz, Nawrouz, Newroz, Novruz, Nowrouz, Nawrouz, Nauryz, Nooruz, Nowruz, Navruz, Nevruz, Nowruz, Navruz. Plus the Persian نوروز.

Now the New Year reviving old Desires,
The thoughtful Soul to Solitude retires,
Where the White Hand of Moses on the Bough
Puts out, and Jesus from the Ground suspires...
The Persian New Year occurs at the spring equinox.

The reference to the "White Hand of Moses" (Exodus 4:6) suggests a white spring blossom such as seen on the branches of the May-tree.

The Persians believe(d) that the healing powers of Jesus resided in his breath.

Exodus 4 records signs apparently shown to Moses to demonstrate the healing and restoring power of God: "6 Then the Lord said, “Put your hand inside your cloak.” So Moses put his hand into his cloak, and when he took it out, the skin was leprous[a]—it had become as white as snow. 7 “Now put it back into your cloak,” he said. So Moses put his hand back into his cloak, and when he took it out, it was restored, like the rest of his flesh"

The logic was that if God can do such things, then God also has the power to free the children of Israel from their slavery in Egypt.

Interested to read the Persian slant: the Christian tradition links breath, with the Spirit ("Ruach") - which is how the Bible states the disciples were commissioned by Jesus with the Spirit (John 20).

Donald Trump and his administration have not been following this discussion...

Pompeo says God may have sent Trump to save Israel from Iran (BBC News)

PS. John McK's quote above was from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.

Did you know that until 1752 the New Year, legally, began on 25th March in Britain?

Edit: With the exception of Scotland. (See link in David Sedgwick's post, below.)

Thanks for that, David.

So, it was changed to synchronize the calendar with the Gregorian one in use in the rest of Western Europe.

I also note from the article linked to that Scotland had already changed the date of the New Year to 1st January commencing from the year 1600.

The holidays for Nowrouz begin March 21st and conclude April 2nd or 3rd (officially March 23rd but historically the first 5 days are public Nowrouz, where kings accepted people and the rest 7 days were called private Nowrouz where kings visited court members)

Thanks for those details.

By the way, instead of "accepted people...", which is understandable, a native speaker of English would use "received the people..."

Happy Nowrouz!
