I thought the whole idea was that we would get through this by not being together.

That would be modern day Britain.

Within my circle of acquaintance, there are widely differing views regarding the competence of the Boris who went into hospital. There is greater consensus regarding the Boris which emerged.

Our PM has for some time reminded me of some well known fictional character. I have realised that it is Denethor, Steward of Gondor.

Maybe the film version? Denethor in the books is quite impressive overall, before he gives into tragic despair - which certainly isn't a state of mind Boris appears especially prone to!

What is more surprising in a way is that they can't seem to find a way to govern 'round' Boris either.

Tbh I am very much in the "Johnson is the same person now as he always was" camp.

I have been a Boris apologist ( and have had much to apologise for! ) so I do stand by the book version. I suspect he must have moments of lucidity in which he understands what he has done and drops into despair. But it would take a superhuman effort, for which he does not have the strength, even to start to put things right.

That is a defensible position, and I doubt that historians will reach agreement.

I'm mildly consoled by the thought that it could have been Jeremy Corbyn trying to run things instead.

He would almost certainly have listened more to informed medical opinion earlier, rather than cranks mithering on about "herd immunity".

But what if he had listened to his brother?

I really doubt it would make any difference who was PM - it's a difficult situation and people will make mistakes. We never found out what Corbyn thought was a good idea. He just said in opposition "You're doing it wrong". He never actually said what should be done. It reminded me of some of my managers at work.

That does tend to be what opposition leaders do, historically speaking.

Yes, I assume that must be what many people are saying, rather than taking personal responsibility for the consequences of voting in the current shower

Thousands of unnecessary deaths and major economic damage, in comparison to nearly everywhere else, all down to the incompetence of 1 man; yes, that man must be Corbyn, not Johnson

All true, but I don't think Johnson has a clue about what is going on around him. When things are bad enough, and they are going to get much worse, there will be a coup - but from which direction?
