Always check what you wrote before publishing

Post by Kevin Thurlow » Tue Jan 10, 2023 10:26 am

I'm indebted to an old work colleague for showing me a tweet from the "Flat Earth Society" -

"The Flat Earth Society has members all around the globe."

Physics-Astronomy.com responded, "Say that again, but slowly."

It was an April Fools' joke. It's a shame you yourself didn't check that before posting.

The date wasn't visible on the shot I was sent! But it certainly proves the point...

You could believe they might say it, which makes it a good joke.

"The Flat Earth Society has members from all corners of the planet".

'Corners', wait a minute, does this mean ....

I believe it was Ernest Wise who advised audiences to read various works

"What I wrote"

on several occasions.

"The Flat Earth Society has members all around the globe."
This joke is on a par with the one that went: "Tomorrow's Psychic Evening has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances!"

Except that the latter sort of thing has definitely happened.

True. Another one was a lecture on urban myths, including the one about slipping on a banana skin. The lecturer had to cancel as he broke an ankle when he slipped on a banana skin.

Was the lecturer John Cleese and was he discussing means of defending oneself?

The banana-skin slipping 'myth' was popularised in Hollywood silent movies as a visual euphemism for horse excrement

That's interesting, and many silent movies are considerably better than modern movies...
