What is your favourite film score?

I want to expand my repertoire and need direction. My favourite is Ennio Morricone's "The Mission" although I am slightly loathe to admit it as it might make me seen obsessed with religious themes

My favourites - Lord of the Rings - Howard Shore
Gladiator - Hans Zimmer
V for Vendetta - Dario Marianelli
Amelie - Yann Tiersen

If you admire Morricone, it's impossible to surpass his score for The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Also, try Sergiey Prokofiev's brilliant score for Ivan the Terrible; or Leonard Bernstein's for On The Waterfront.
For something different, try Miles Davis's score for Louis Malle's L'Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud

'Exodus' from the film of the same name.
Play it loud.

Later someone put mushy words to it. Naff.

Some great ideas already, thanks.

I do love Ecstasy Of Gold (TGTBATU). It seems to me like pure genius wrapped up tightly in a web of incredible cleverness.

I think the reason I slightly prefer Gabriel's Oboe (The Mission) is that the incredible cleverness is stripped bare leaving just the pure genius to admire.

Once Upon a Time in the West is another stunningly beautiful score by Morricone.
Other favourites:
The Magnificent Seven
The Cook, the Thief, his Wife & her Lover
Blade Runner
Out of Africa
If you are prepared to forsake cinema for TV, the soundtrack to Twin Peaks by Angelo Badalamenti is utterly haunting. (If you like that, track down Julee Cruse's album Floating into the Night - it's brilliant.)

Agree with those. I like the soundtrack to Drowning by Numbers a little more than CTWL.
I'll suggest the obvious Amadeus and even more obviously - if you are in the mood for a blockbuster - anything with a John Williams score.

The theme for the later series of the Master Game was by Morricone, I believe.

Another favourite of mine: Witchfinder General. The sweeping score accompanying Ian Ogilvy as he rides cross-country is terrific.

The Third Man, High Noon and The Godfather.
I can play versions of the theme of all three on the guitar - versions for which the world is probably not yet ready.

Bladerunner and
Lawrence of Arabia have unforgettable scores...
