Australia 47 - and a query

Post by David Robertson » Fri Nov 11, 2011 12:11 am

I know Mick Norris has kicked this off on the other (India) thread. But I'm starting anew because I want the cricketing cognoscenti to notice, and if possible, supply an answer to my query.

Australia were bowled out for 47 yesterday. And a remarkable 19 wickets fell in the space of three hours.

But one other astonishing record was equalled. Yesterday was only the second time in the history of Test cricket that all four innings of the match, or parts thereof, were in play on the same day.

Hence, my query: when was the previous occasion?

...and I don't know the answer

Right. Thanks. And apparently there's this one too:

Alex kicked it off really (Given their lowest test score was 109 years ago, I am surprised he hasn't mentioned the wonderful venue)

Given Australia were 21 for 9, has there been another occasion when a team has doubled (or more) their score in a last wicket stand?

Yes. England v West Indies at the Oval in 1980. Willey and Willis came together at 92/9 and the score was 209/9 at the end of the match.

Cricinfo has thoughtfully gathered together some stats:-

It appears that this is only the second instance in test matches, but I expect it has happened a lot in first class cricket. For example in 1982 Geoff Boycott and Graeme Stevenson took the score from 143 for 9 to 292 all out against Warwickshire. In 1928 Alan Kippax and Alan Hooker took the Victoria score from 113 for 9, to 420 all out, almost trebling the score.

Phil

Thanks for that, very interesting

Harmison top scoring with 42, yet England reaching as much as 304, was surprising

South Africa currently 152 for 1 and looking set for victory (needing 236)

Good picture of the scoreboard yesterday :)

Not sure if South Africa v England at Centurion Park counts. SA declared their first innings on 248/9 ish, then England forfeited their first innings and SA their second innings before England knocked off the 249 runs required with 2 wickets in hand.

Of course, it subsequently turned out that the match was fixed.

No, it certainly doesn't count - and not because the match was fixed. The four innings must have been in play at some point. One cannot be too much of a stickler in these matters!

Second query: what is the point of Mitchell Johnson? With wickets falling like leaves in an Autumn gale, he managed 1-92 off 17 overs. As the Barmy Army sing:

He bowls to the left
He bowls to the right
Wherever he bowls
Mitchell Johnson is less than impressive
