Joke analysis
This morning I was reading this terribly funny joke by Steve Gibbons. You can find it online, as it is the latest post in his blog -Steve Gibbons'(sic) Chess Blog. He pokes fun at a recent post, made on this very forum, by one S. Reuben. The highpoint of the gag is the reference to Henry Fowler, lexicographer, and dictator of Panama from 1882-5. Why though, does the reference contain this malformed URL: http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Watson_Fowler ? Is this funnier than including a correct URL?

Re: Joke analysis
I took another look at the blog this afternoon, only to find that the URL was no longer malformed. Well I must say, this completely ruined the joke for me.

I must apologize Christopher, you are quite right, I did mean Gubbins.

Re: Joke analysis
The ancient Greeks used to put people into two categories, you were either an 'epicurean' or a 'stoic', an epicurean only sees life as sensory gratification, if your surroundings were nice and everyone else seemed to think you were a nice person, why should you question anything?
The other sort believe the only way to make progress is, via suffering, a good example for this sort of person is, Vincent Van Gogh.
Doing a hatchet job on someone, via their surname is a bit puerile.
I am a bit of an outsider, so know very little about the person behind this blog http://stevegiddinschessblog.wordpress. ... ide-rules/
But one thing I am becoming increasingly aware of, Bobby Fischer was a stoic who suffered for what he believed in. They called him crazy to discredit him. It is not what people say that makes them crazy, it is what they DO.
