Help with Word / Microsoft Office

Post by Ian Jamieson » Wed Jul 04, 2012 11:50 am

Someone on here must know how to do this.

I am currently completing a job application.

Where do I find or what is the character code for a tick?

I have tried putting a cross but it doesn't look right.

What do you do?

Thanks

Hi Ian

Try go to font style, in the drop down box choose windings2, press & hold the shift key, press letter 'R' should be a tick in a box and 'P' should be a tick.

It's hidden from general view these days, but in Windows 3.1, you would use a utility called Character Map. It's still there and comes up if you type "character map" into the Start "Search" box. The font "Wingdings" has many weird and wonderful characters which includes ü. This shows as a tick in the Wingdings font.

Thanks.

It looks a lot better.

It also looks as if the producers of s/w & h/w (someone has asked why there is still no specific key for 'tick') have not acknowledged the rise of the tick-box culture, and that the simple practice of getting the designers of forms to try to fill in their own creations before inflicting them on the general public is not being followed. (Unless, of course, there is a conspiracy to slow down the rate at which forms are completed and returned to certain organisations.)

Insert / Symbol is another way of doing it.

You can also select a tick as your bullet-point symbol: Format / Bullets and Numbering / Customize

Admittedly I have quite an old version.

Can anyone tell me, in a word, the number of ways to skin a cat, please?

In a word or in MS Word?

This isn't it but a wordless response might be the best answer.

I think the problem was that you need to know that the tick is in wingdings. Otherwise there are too many fonts to look through.

Once you know where to look there are lots of ways of getting there.
