There are no mentions of chess or bridge (the game) in the 2017 list. The chances of a UK player being honoured are very slim indeed especially when chess remains in the dark ages as far as Mind Sport / Sport status is concerned.

Perhaps it is time to "Ask the Director" (which one Mike T?) "Please provide a list of all honours nominations from the BCF / ECF since 1990."

It is much more likely that someone will be recognised for their services to chess in terms of the education of children and / or the provision of chess for children.

Another strong possibility would be "Services to chess journalism" I think we all know who I am thinking of. :D

Would the ECF make / support these nominations? I doubt it but I would be delighted to be corrected!

New Zealand's only chess grandmaster Murray Chandler is a member of the Order of Merit for his services to the game.

"Among those appointed MNZM are [...] chess grandmaster Murray Chandler"

MNZM is Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit:

It is the lowest rank of the order, but still great to see it being awarded.

Larry Ebbin is on the Bermuda list for services to chess.

"“His passion is the game of chess. And over the years, Mr. Ebbin has helped to educate, inspire and develop a wide section of the local community through teaching, promoting and organising chess in Bermuda."

More at the link. The award is called the Queen’s Certificate and Badge of Honour.

I see the Queen's Birthday Honours List is being announced.

Mark Carne, the outgoing Chief Executive of Network Rail, has been awarded the CBE for services to the railway industry.
