The English Language
Re: The English Language
Somewhere along the long line of this thread it did stop being primarily about the English language and translating chess-related material.
It took a morbid turn, bordering on the gruesome, that only makes for comfortable reading in specialist academic discussions or uncomfortable reading in ghoulish circles.
I had hoped that branch would wither away once the questioner's posts were satisfactorally answered, as has always been the case here, and that he would cease and desist from pursing the subject matter any further.
He has had more than enough help to better understand the numerous abstruse quotes he has posted about how ancient tribes and societies dealt with the loss of members of their communities.
Things have moved on in the world in that respect, though some more appropriate parts of ancient rituals remain with us.
I'd be grateful if Soheil, too, would move on, away from anthropological topics, to subjects more suitable for the English Chess Forum - that is so kindly provided by our benefactor, Carl.

Re: The English Language
Somewhere along the line, this thread also became probably the largest (though not the longest-running) one on the forum. It has reached 140 pages, whereas the "Media comments on chess" one is 'only' 138 pages (but is probably one of the longest-running ones).
I'll leave as an exercise to the reader which thread is of more value (and when the cross-over point occurred).

He might also stand a rather better chance of getting expert help with some of this stuff elsewhere!
(The recent bits do seem to need it.).

Seems so.
What did you mean by "Not chess" if it shouldn't be?

Re: The English Language
How about this question then - why would someone who claims to have "Native or bilingual proficiency" in English (see someone's LinkedIn profile) need to ask these questions?Carl Hibbard wrote:I have been asked harder questionsChristopher Kreuzer wrote:Somewhere along the line, this thread also became probably the largest (though not the longest-running) one on the forum. I didn't know you were annoyed by these questions. I didn't mean thatJohn McKenna wrote:I'd be grateful if Soheil, too, would move on, away from anthropological topics, to subjects more suitable for the English Chess Forum - that is so kindly provided by our benefactor, Carl.

Re: The English Language
But this person is who he is ...he may be asking the wrong question in the wrong forum - but I don't understand if it's a problem. As long as people are willing to respond, is that a problem? I can see that this is a chess forum - but there is a "Not Chess" section as has been pointed out. If no one responded, then it would stop - but is that necessary or advantageous? These are simply questions - not an attempt to advocate a course of action

Re: The English Language
Well originally it was 'translating chess', which isn't quite directly chess but unarguably something we should be able to genuinely help with.
I don't mind the current stuff so much but I can see a few might & with the latest stuff being really quite technical and specialist but in a different area it does seem like he might be able to get better advice elsewhere.

Re: The English Language
I was not annoyed by your questions. They were of interest linguistically. However, for too long now, the subject matter has been out of place here. Please stick to chess-related topics from now onsoheil_hooshdaran wrote:I didn't know you were annoyed by these questions. Re: The English Language
So if topics on here need to be chess-related, what exactly is the "Not Chess" category intended for?John McKenna wrote: However, for too long now, the subject matter has been out of place here. Please stick to chess-related topics from now on
Re: The English Language
Not exactly sure myself.
Other topics - such board and mind games - that chessplayers have an interest in, for instance?
Or, topics that someone is interested in finding out what chessplayers views are.
Surely not for anything and everything - there are certainly other much more suitable and fruitful forums, etc. to discuss some of the stuff presented in the past on this one in "Not Chess".
