What's the difference between "make use of" and "use"?

I'd say that "make use of" carries a slight implication of using something not for its primary use, though. I might say "Soheil Hooshdaran made use of the English Chess Forum to discuss the finer points of English usage", but I wouldn't say "Soheil Hooshdaran made use of the English Chess Forum to discuss where he went wrong in chess games".

What does it mean that "...the central Black King will feel the heat"?

Yet another metaphor for in danger. "In the firing line" would have equivalent meaning.

What does it mean if someone "plays into" a position?

That is meant metaphorically rather than literally, methinks ;)

They're doubled and isolated. That's pretty miserable in most circumstances.
