What would you do?

Post by soheil_hooshdaran » Tue Aug 25, 2015 9:09 pm

Hello.
Many of you might have read my story.
I translated a book and got help from many people, including the helpful members of this site. Just prior to printing, after the pagination process, sending the book for registration, etc, my publisher to-be told me to email the London-based publisher of the original English work, that copyright is not observed in Iran.
I emailed them and the response was that I can not publish the translation.
It was quite a mood-killer for me since I had put great hope on that book.
An email was sent on my part after the Christmas holidays to the London-based publisher and he replied that I do whatever I want and post the contract to their address. I drew up a new contract, consulted a lawyer, and posted them a contract with a letter describing the changes made to the original contract.
As the post from Iran was unreliable, a few months later, I asked someone in Europe to re-send the same letter and contract (not sure if he did so), but I still got no answer.
I printed a few copies already, selling some, gifting some and issuing some.
I get very miserable when I remember about it
What would you do if you were in my shoes?

I think you should ask the person in Europe if he definitely sent the letter. Apart from that, if at first you don't succeed -- give up.

I have asked him and he answered in the affirmative
But he also asked his relative in London to posted it to the company, and I can feel something is not right here.

Giving up is meaning less for me. Since even if I give up, I don't know what to do with the books already sold, those already issued, and those already gifted.
And my dignity is on the line, too. What to tell to the people?

I am sorry that I don't have a solution to your problem. Maybe one of the other people can come up with something.

I have been told by the guy in Europe that the proprietors don't care, but I don't believe it. If such was the case, why would the proprietors stop answering me?

Is that good or bad?

Can be both good and bad.

Good, in the sense I was able to sell 110+ copies so far.
Bad, since I am yet unsure as to be allowed to print more books. The reason I avoided distributing the book in the whole country was that I didn't know if I will be allowed to print more copies, at least one of the reasons. 100+ books have been sold all in my city. Iran has about 30 provinces, each with many counties, cities, districts, and villages.
