English leg spinner
We have a Bolton lad who had an extraordinary debut for Lancs, with his first over being halted after 3 balls, and resumed half an hour later
BBC report
He has finished them off since, with figures of
Overs Maidens Runs Wickets Econ
23.1 6 49 5 2.11
Matthew Parkinson, let's hope we remember the name

Re: English leg spinner
It is - his twin brother Callum plays for Staffordshire by the way
Funnily enough, this summer has seen the launch of the Greater Manchester cricket league with a view to improving standards, and ultimately strengthen the players available to Lancs (who also have Matt's fellow 19 year old ex-Bolton School pupil, Haseem Hamed opening the batting, currently 81 not out and formerly of England U19)
If you look at the list of clubs, you will see that Heywood is in Greater Manchester for cricket purposes

Re: English leg spinner
There does seem to be a rather historically unusual glut of young leg spinners in county cricket. Don't think it can be down to Shane Warne with the timing, so maybe its the way they've turned out useful in one day stuff.

Lancs have shed loads of spinners at the moment (but enough of their chess officials )

Haseem Hamed has his maiden century for Lancs
I have a mate who is a member, and says he is very impressive, could be the new Michael Atherton

Re: English leg spinner
He's certainly truly impressive in a non modern way - career scoring rate 33.86
That's ok I guess. If he then slowed down at test level it would get to be a bit of a problem!

He's now made a century in both innings of the current Roses match - must be close to a call up for England Lions now, wherever they are off to this winterMartinCarpenter wrote:He's certainly truly impressive in a non modern way - career scoring rate 33.86

Re: English leg spinner
We'll need a spinner for the flat pitches down under next year. Ali is alright but not quite world class.

Unless they stick Duckett in instead of course. Bit of a contrast there!

I'm assuming it is Hameed for Hales and Duckett for Vince in the team

Re: English leg spinner
Duckett does seem to open in FC too, although he 'only' averages ~44 there. His list A average is utterly terrifying - 54 at over a run a ball?
They do only seem to have 5 truly specialist batsmen in the test squad 7 all rounders if you count the keepers mind!
We will need to be making space for a second spinner somehow, which is presumably likely to involve pushing Ali up the order, so only the one spare slot. Can actually see us dropping say Broad(?!) later in the year if India do prepare some of their crazier spinny wickets - Woakes/Stokes bat so well of course.

Re: English leg spinner
England will likely go with the 4-seamer 2-spinner approach that didn't work in the UAE the last time they played Pakistan there. The four seamers are likely to be Anderson, Broad, Woakes and Stokes. The two spinners will be Ali, and possibly Rashid; although Ansari may get selected because he is a batsman who bowls a bit, which seems to be England's preferred approach. Rashid is really a bowler who bats a bit.MartinCarpenter wrote:Duckett does seem to open in FC too, although he 'only' averages ~44 there. So that leaves the England team as something like: Cook, Hameed, Root, Duckett, Bairstow, Stokes, Ali, Woakes, Rashid, Broad, Anderson.
I think Leach was unlucky not to get picked for the squad ahead of Batty. I might even have had him as the second spinner ahead of Rashid.
