Week 28

When I asked the fourth official why he didn't give more stoppage time........he replied by saying 'why do you want more time?’” Arsene Wenger after one of his 3-0 defeats this week.

So Manchester City march on humiliating Arsenal twice. Top captains Andrew Harley and Adam Bremner are making a determined effort to distance themselves from the pack but there are still 10 weeks to go and still plenty of twists and turns to come. Top score is Simon Brown with 78 points which is three times as many as the week's low score of 26 which once again is from Alana Deyes - her team Pjanic at the Disco is the only one left now with a three figure score and is now in 5,145, 459th place.

Top Team Quick update on overall placings Boom Xhaka Laca with 1,880 points heads the overall ratings for an eighth successive week. The team is captained by Bharat Dhody (India).

Week 29

My team also showed that we do not just have commitment, they have the belief they can turn things around, they are strong in this moment, Carlos Carvalhal. A man whose team was written off at Christmas.

George Georgiou was amongst the frontrunners last season - so I am pleased to give a mention this week for his top score of 82 whilst the low score is almost inevitably that of Alana Deyes with 20 as she drops another 30,000 places and still remains in three figures. Whilst the top two teams remain the same, Alex Bullen makes a determined challenge to join them and is now up to third place and within touching distance of the leaders.

Bad decision of the week I've been racking my brains to think of how I can mention my team (still stuck in mid-table) however I now have the ideal opportunity to advise that last week I transferred out Heung-Min Son who was the week's top player with 16 points and replaced him with Leroy Sané who scored 3 points. Doh!

Quarter 3 Report - Weeks 21-29

The third quarter was dominated by five teams who spent the nine weeks shuffling around position with Peter Staneland, Adam Bremner and Andrew Harley each spending three weeks as league leaders. This complacency was rather ruined when Alex Bullen made an appearance in Week 27 and he now looks to mount a challenge in the final quarter. Scores as usual based on 5 for a 1st place down to 1 for 5th - number of weeks shown in brackets.

1= Adam Bremner 32 pts (9)
Andrew Harley 32 pts (9)
3 Michael Ashworth 25 pts (9)
4 Peter Staneland 23 pts (8)
5 Sam Herring 17 pts (7)
6 Alex Bullen 6 pts (3)

Week 30

"It's a challenge I'm excited by.I understand what it takes in this league to win games." Mark Hughes - appointed as Southampton manager.

In the merry-go-round of managerial appointments who can fail to be amazed at the resilience of the old guard with Roy Hodgson, Alan Pardew, Paul Lambert, Sam Allardyce, David Moyes, Claude Puel and now "Sparky" Hughes being given jobs after being dismissed from other Premier Clubs.
Anyway Alex Bullen is now hot-on-the-heels of Andrew Harley. Top banana of the week was Andrew Garside with 68 points whilst the stewed prunes goes to Mike Swanwick with a miserable 16 points.

Meanwhile it's Goodbye to Kane who is out with an ankle injury. Plenty of twists and turns to come.

Week 31

It was Free Hit week so here are 10 penalty kicks to get you in the mood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rv3v7ZfYp-g

Just four fixtures so possibly a low scoring week? Not so as managers in the know played their free hit card - and with Mohamed Salah scoring four goals and an assist it was bumper points time with 14 managers scoring 100 points or more - these included our top four who have now opened a not inconsiderable gap to the fifth placed side. Peak performance was from John Garnett with 118 points whilst several teams who have been left to fend for themselves were in single figures. Down in the dumps were Alan Tate and Sabrina Chevannes both of whom managed the low score of the week with four points.

League Leaders The top teams broke the 2000 barrier this week with Boom Xhaka Laca still in the lead with 2074 points. Andrew Harley, our leader, is still some way off in 8.960th spot!

Week 32

You always have to have faith in your own abilities and that has to be evident to your players. Alan Pardew
2nd April - Alan Pardew sacked after eight successive defeats.

In a strange quirk of coincidence, top score of the week of 79 points came from League leader Andrew Harley whilst the low score of 26 points was almost inevitably from bottom marker Alana Deyes. Whilst Robert Ashworth made a welcome return to the top five in 5th place, it looks as though the battle to become Premier Chess champions is now between the top four teams.

Nick's Picks It's some time since we had a look at the selections of Nick London. With Alana in the field, Nick has been unable to cement his position at the foot of the table as in 2016/17. Last time we looked Nick had selected Brandon Mason - an inspiring choice at the time as he'd not kicked a ball in anger this season for his home club Watford. Although Brandon still sits on Nick's subs bench he was sent on loan to Dundee United in January. However in December Nick used a transfer to bring in Axel Tuanzebe (Manchester United). Axel played for one minute in Week 22 and is now loaned to Aston Villa.

Oops - bit of a bad week here. Salah & Robertson didn't play; captain Harry Kane scored a goal - then it was credited to Erikson. Never mind - 1st substitute Davy Pröpper to come off the bench - oh he's been sent off so -1 and a three match ban to 04 May! :(

Week 33

Important Information
While the second Spurs goal v Stoke City has now been awarded to Harry Kane after review, this will not be reassigned in FPL in accordance with the game rules and therefore points will not be modified.

Well folks there you have it - all those (like me) who had pencilled in Harry Kane as captain lost 8 points or so. With Salah not appearing for Liverpool it was a week of low, low scores for the majority of captains. Our top teams scored 32, 33 or 35 points but none of the other sides could make much progress. Top of the tree was Richard Pert on 58 points whilst Mike Swanwick & Simon Brown were rooted to the bottom on 14 points

Overall Very much like the Premier League there are few English managers in sight - just one in the top 10 (in 7th position) whilst the remaining nine managers hail from every corner of the globe - two from South Africa and one each from India, Estonia, United Arab Emirates, Ireland, Tanzania, Barbados & Indonesia.

Week 34

"I managed the club with full commitment and integrity. To all the Arsenal lovers, take care of the values of the club." Arsene Wenger

Arsenal announce that after 22 years as manager, Arsene Wenger will be leaving at the end of the season - despite still having a year on his contract.

After a week of low scores, a week of high scores with a number of managers playing their bonus chips. Bench Boost cards contributed to the 117 pt tally of Mark Page and the even higher 126 points of Graham Ives. Graham's score was the 633rd highest overall of the week. There was no change at the top of the League where the top four teams have now passed the 2,000 point mark. Andrew Harley still has a 21 point overall lead and he is the only manager left with both a Wild Card & Bench Boost to play so must be favourite to be the Pep Guardiola of Premier Chess. Meanwhile the Mark Hughes for this week is Nick London who scored a mediocre 42 points.

Week 35

"The best word I can say to describe this is: Boom!" Jurgen Klopp.

Andrew Harley took a giant leap to retaining his title as Premier Chess Champion as his rivals faltered behind him. Alex Bullen could only manage a small step and second place is now back with Adam Bremner but the gap is now 61 points to the leader. Richard Beach top scores with 82 points whilst Richard Dineley & Mitchell Burke manage a mediocre dozen points each.

Week 36

They think it's all over ........... Kenneth Wolstenholme

It is now as Andrew Harley increases his lead to 71 points. That's a 50 point increase in just two weeks. The remaining top four teams shuffle around with a mere eight points separating second from fourth. Top doh of the week was Kevin Williamson with 76 points whilst sol-fa behind was David Grobler with 17 points. After twelve weeks of decline, bottom team Alana Deyes "Pjanic at the disco" has surprisingly risen for the last three weeks - but lest teams above are suddenly quaking at this new found form, Alana is now in 5,205,089th place!

Finally If you're reading this on Friday evening and intend to play your Wild Card/Bench Boost/Triple Captain - too late. They smuggled a Friday night fixture in again!

Week 37

........ it is now!!! Kenneth Wolstenholme

as Andrew Harley opens up an 88 point gap at the top of the League. The only person who might have had confidence to close such a gap is Carlos Carvalhal who said earlier this week ""In this moment we are not relegated." but need to turn round a 10 goal deficit as well as win their last match and Southampton to lose. There again Carlos made the quote before Huddersfield drew with Chelsea. Anyway on to the top performance of the Year in Premier Chess with eight teams scoring 100 points or better. The highest score of the season of 132 points was achieved this week outstripping the previous best of 126 by Graham Ives in Week 34 - modesty forbids me to mention the manager's name. Low point of the week was 34 points from Dominic Rabbitte - little wonder as the team has transferred one player all season and used none of the special chips.

1 Harley Hotspurs Andrew Harley 101 2308

3 Discovered Cech Michael Ashworth 64 2200
4 Crouch > Lukaku Alex Bullen 68 2191
5 Despicable Mee Robert Ashworth 68 2163

And the winner is ........ English Test cricketer Stuart Broad who beat everyone else to score 180 points and win the week's top manager award and the goody bag of prizes https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/44075226. But who will the overall winner be? For over half of the season since Week 18 Boom Xhaka Laca managed by Bharat Dhody has been in first position with a temporary drop to 2nd in Week 20. Yet with one week to go three teams, the closest just seven points adrift, snap at the leader's heels. One has a horrible feeling that the title might just be snatched away in Week 38.

Week 38

It was a hot hundred - no not the highest score of the week - but the margin of Andrew Harley's win as he successfully defended his title as Premier Chess Fantasy Football Manager. In the final weeks his challengers melted away to give Andrew an impressive victory. His overall position was 1,138 out of 5,910,135 competing teams. Top dog of the week was John Reyes who scored 96 points whilst the mangy mutt for a second successive week was Dominic Rabbitte who moved downwards to 72/73 - still above Alana Deyes - but below Nick London who after ten successive drops at last found some form.
