MCCU county championships OTB 2021/22

Post by Mick Norris » Sat Sep 11, 2021 2:41 pm

MCCU Covid-19 precautions
22. a. It is the policy of the MCCU that appropriate face coverings (masks or visors) must be worn during MCCU county matches, unless a player has a medical exemption;
b. Temperature checks are not required
c. It is a recommendation of the MCCU that all players eligible for vaccination should be double-vaccinated. The MCCU will not seek confirmation of vaccination status. Players who do not want to play an unvaccinated opponent should take this into account in deciding whether to play for their county.
d. Hand sanitizers must be readily available at each venue; there will be no handshakes;
e. Home counties (or both counties in a neutral venue) should use their best endeavours to space tables well apart to support social distancing
f. If any player exhibits symptoms or has a positive test result up to 10 days prior to a match, they must not attend the match. Non-compliance will lead to the relevant board being defaulted.
g. All players must agree that if they develop symptoms or test positive within 7 days after participating in a match, the captains of both teams should be notified immediately, to enable them to notify all participants. The anonymity of any player testing positive must be protected.
h. All players must be made aware that they are subject to, and must familiarise themselves with, HMG guidance https://www.gov.uk/guidance/covid-19-co ... -cannot-do

Does anyone else think the Under 1650 competition should be 12 players to bring it into line with what the under 120 competition would have been, prior to the grades being changed?

Yes, I would support that. In the SCCU U1650 teams have the option of going for a 12 or 16 board match and in nearly every case it has been 12 boards. I was captain of the Surrey U100 team when we entered the national stages and had to default when we couldn't raise a team to go to the midlands. The County Association took a dim view of that and I'll have my work cut out to persuade us to enter a 16 board U1650 team when all the previous matches have been 12 board ones.

Final results with only 6 matches actually played

The MCCU website has
MCCU nominations of teams for national stages

25 Mar. Greater Manchester are in the open competion and Lincolnshire decided not to take up their option. The other nominations are: Minor Counties Warwickshire and Worcestershire; u2050 Nottinghamshire; u1850 Greater Manchester (Leicestershire declined the offer to participate); u1650 Warwickshire and Worcestershire; u1450 Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. Where more than one county has been nominated the first names is MCCU 1.

So only six matches were played under the terms of this policy.

Surprise, surprise!

At the u1850 match, I'm told only 1 player wore a mask (which is why I didn't play)

Surely the worst thing to do is to announce such a policy and then not enforce it.

I'd agree with that David, but it is a democracy, and the elected body has made some rules at an AGM, and then been shouted down by the anti-maskers

Last week, an anti-masker threatened legal repercussions against the MCF for having a Covid policy (note, not enforcing it, just having it); as a result of this, I am stepping down from 1 of my chess positions to avoid dealing with him again

Do chess organisations need to go beyond what governments and at a pinch venues insist on?

Governments: you mean this?
The government is removing remaining domestic restrictions in England. There are still steps you can take to reduce the risk of catching and spreading COVID-19:
• Get vaccinated
• Let fresh air in if meeting indoors, or meet outside
• Consider wearing a face covering in crowded, enclosed spaces
• Get tested if you have COVID-19 symptoms, and stay at home if positive

No they don't, but they can if they want to.

The English chess community nows seems entirely polarised, with the following two groups.

1. Those who just want to play chess in any way that the Government of the day permits.

2. Those who wish to impose as many restrictions as they can on the playing of chess, making this a thoroughly unpleasant experience, and then do not play themselves.

In my years of working in financial markets, there was a very short word which we used to describe people in the second group. I don't suppose I can use it here.
