After losing their opening Under 120 match to Warwickshire by 7.5-4.5, Nottinghamshire exacted a swift revenge by beating the West Midlands side 9.5-6.5 in the Under 160 competition.

G Man beat Staffs 9.5 - 6.5 in yesterday's match in the Open/Minor section :D

Good result against a strong (as always) Staffs team

Here`s the final score card...
http://www.mccu.org.uk/cm14-15/minor/mi ... 9oct14.htm

Not sure I can see really that Staffs did much wrong, if there board 16 really was ungraded, but I suppose in a previous life he might have been graded at 200...rules are rules.

A quick check of his grading profile will show he has never been graded 200 http://www.ecfgrading.org.uk/new/menu.p ... ile=player

Why would the Rules default an ex-graded player in an Open competition? That's just having rules for the sake of it or because the controller likes being nasty to match captains.

It does seem a bit unnecessary. Greater M'cr's Ian Lamb was pleased to have held on for the draw in a difficult ending, to the gratitude of his team mates as I hear it. He might now potentially be left feeling he needn't have bothered.

As a returnee to chess these last three seasons, after 30+ years absence, I have been struck by the encroachment of nit-picking rules, often seemingly imposed from on high in ways in which most rank and file club players find unnecessary (to put it mildly). I was at a match somewhere recently where a player's mobile phone went off early on, audibly. However, all the players apart from me must have been distinctly hard of hearing (....!), as no-one said anything, and there was no action -though a few amused smiles were exchanged.

I'm not certain that the Rules apply to Open/Minor teams - see

http://www.mccu.org.uk/cmatches/ug_players.htm

and

http://www.mccu.org.uk/cmatches/cmrules.htm

from which
A player who has no published grade may participate in any grade restricted tournament providing that there is no doubt in the team captain's mind that the player is not of such a playing strength as to breach the limits set and the inclusion of that player is cleared with the County Championship Controller before he/she plays. An ungraded player not cleared prior to competing can be deemed to be an ineligible player and rule 4 will apply. It is accepted that in exceptional circumstances it may not be possible to contact the controller prior to the match, in such cases a player must be cleared within 48 hrs of the match taking place. Team captains should have recourse to previous grading lists and the advice of their local grader. Any disputes on ungraded players should be referred to the County Championship Controller for the tournament. Counties may enter more than one team in any grade restricted tournament. Where a county has more than one team in any grade restricted tournament, players are not interchangeable and each team must be a completely separate squad.
The Minor isn't (for the MCCU) a grade restricted competition, but in any event Staffs have entered the Open

The decision has now been reversed albeit the website appears to have a typo in the GM score http://www.mccu.org.uk/cm14-15/minor/mi ... 9oct14.htm
