July 2020 grades

It seems clear to me that there will be no OTB chess between now and the cut-off date of June 30th. Could it be considered that the cut-off date is brought forward to April 30th? This would give time to get the results in and also bearing in mind the ECF is running on a skeleton staff give extra time to calculate and produce the new list.

It seems clear, but it may not actually be right: there may be games in club championships or whatever going on (i.e. individual arrangements to play graded games).

Surely under the current restrictions such games shouldn't be taking place? Anyway by the end of this week such meetings will certainly be banned.

Meetings of more than one person will be banned?

Time will tell, but for recreational and leisure purposes quite possibly, I would have thought.

Could I make a plea for the ECF to continue to produce Clarke grades until July / August 2021?

If and when OTB chess does start again, Counties, Leagues and Clubs will be trying to pick up where they left off and to catch up in various ways. In some cases their 2020 - 2021 season may not start until 2021.

Moreover, they may not have been able to hold AGMs or EGMs to consider any rule changes.

The last thing that they will want is to have to cope with a new and radically different grading system on top of all that.

It might be better not to publish a list at all. If there is one it will be based on far fewer games than normal, and, as a result, there'll probably be quite a few of the normally less active players losing their grades through not having played the required minimum number of games.

What am I allowed to do when social distancing?

You can see family and friends if it's essential
You can walk your dog
You can provide essential care for elderly relatives and neighbours if you have no symptoms
You can go to the shops to buy food and groceries
You can exercise at a safe distance from others

Playing face-to-face chess games seems to have been inadvertently missed from the list. Basically we shouldn't be doing it.

http://www.ecfgrading.org.uk/new/menu.php

The minimum requirement is 1 game this season and five over the last three years for an "F" grade or 1 game this season and nine over the last three years for an "E" grade. I hardly think there will be hordes of players - even "less active" ones who will lose their grade.

I've been averaging 203 in my 9 Somerset league games, so I definitely want a new grading!

Some people will still have played plenty of games since Christmas, the new list will simply have fewer "A" grades than normal.

I may have missed the answer further up thread or elsewhere, but what is a ten grading point difference in ECF grade going to convert to when we have four digits please? [ Obviously some leagues use the grades as a fairly strict determinant of playing order. ]

Theoretically it should be 80, but I guess a case could be made for 75.

Thanks. That was the answer I was anticipating.

Agree, I played around 10 games in league and 4NCL; plenty of people would have also played tournaments (Hastings, Gibraltar and all weekenders)
