Interesting quote from back then, not much different now?
As far as I recall, that quote is from the late 1960s or early 1970s, just before the Fischer inspired boom.
1969 according to Mike

It appears quite possible that there will no OTB chess in the UK in second half of 2020.
It is also possible that some households with at least 2 graded players could play arrange to play some graded chess.

Ah, but it's well known that grading systems don't work for lighthouse keepers!

The late Dennis Hemsley's grade seemed to me to be a pretty accurate reflection of his true strength.

I hope I don't lose my grade. I had a very decent season before lockdown.

Looks like a lot of players did lose ratings due to "inactivity" - hopefully leagues and tournaments will use these lost ratings for eligibility or the lower grading band tournaments are going to get a battering in September

I have no idea why particular players lost their rating, but numbers have held up quite well. The number of A-F Category players have fallen from 10,824 to 10,231; from January to July In 2019 the drop was about 80.

Shall I give you the gender of all the players I know where you currently have nothing?

Paul, If a grader thinks something is wrong with the list, then as you are one, I encourage you to email Matt or myself and we can work on it.

An obvious question before anybody spends time doing that is whether gender information obtained from ECF membership records has been added to grading records where it was missing? The same question would apply to date of birth.

I know for sure that's not been done.

The ECF has announced a one year extension to the rating category periods, see https://www.englishchess.org.uk/rating- ... xtensions/.

The final sentence of the article states "The extended periods are now active with player categories amended as specfied in the online rating system." However, from a quick inspection of some ratings, that does not appear to have happened. Have I understood the final sentence correctly? (ignoring the typo)

There is a problem with last night's update, which failed. The new categories should be included when this is fixed.

The rules for grades will be changed in September to support monthly grading. We are still on track to deliver these on time.

Everyone who has had at least one grade (separately for standard and rapid) published since 2017 will have a 4-digit grade for January 2020 when our monthly calculations will kick off. At present we are discussing whether a player goes inactive after 3 years or 5 years and the actions to take place at that point. The issue of losing a grade, if one has had a recent one, will not arise until January 2021 at the earliest.

I was recently looking at this, and was wondering if there has been any update on the window of time in which people have to get "back" to playing graded chess to avoid "losing" their grade. Even if they do lose their grade, will the past grading history still be used.

Also, how much longer will the grading history under the old system be made available (I have a note somewhere to download the personal data from that) and is there an easy way to download or request that data (i.e. one's own personal grading history)?
