Perhaps he or you could ask the questions on this forum. The calculation is explained here - https://www.ecfrating.org.uk/v2/help/help_rating.php

We had this interminably before and during the MCF AGM last month

They believe that adding dummy game(s) against a notional 1800 player, rather than a notional 1400 player, is wrong; they'd be much better taking it up directly with the ECF grading team

Adding a dummy game is an anti-deflation device, effectively giving new players a minimum starting rating regardless of their strength. It needs to run for a while to establish whether it is working as intended. That ECF ratings are higher than FIDE ratings is an observable fact, however FIDE are proposing to move their lowest rating from 1000 to 1400 with proportionate additions all the way to 2000 along with adding two dummy games for new players.

Of course we never had P grades, but I'm happy to answer emails about P-ratings.

Clearly we had to develop something automatic for monthly ratings and any such system will not be as good as looking over the shoulder of the new player playing. Also we wanted a mild encouragement for existing players to player new players. To my mind the system is working OK but we continue to monitor it.

It is not true that an adult player starts with an 1800 rating. They have always played at least one (other) game and that moves the dial. Herehttps://www.ecfrating.org.uk/v2/new/rob ... 1&domain=S is an extreme example where a youth starts with just one result (more results in the first month would dilute the influence of the dummy result). The rating is well below the 1560 he obtained on reaching a k-rating.

I've not found facts to be very helpful in the discussions

Or an anti-inflation device, depending on the choice of parameter. When I first heard the idea mooted, many years ago, that was in fact the intention.

Having played no classical chess since 2020 I was surprised to see that my game from the 4NCL in February 2024 gave me an ECF provisional rating of 2453. My previous rating was 2290 so is this P rating just based on the 2024 game or is there more to the calculation than that?

Click on the red rating either in your profile or view OTB games to see the calculation. Your challenge is to convert this dubious rating into a real (aka full or k-rating) by maintaining it over 9 more games.

Thanks Brian. At my current rate of activity I doubt that I will live long enough for that!

On a serious note, how long do people with a 'P' rating have to convert it to a 'K' rating? I am similarly quite inactive and I have a 'P' rating that I could feasibly plan my next rated event to try and meet the challenge posted above by Brian. The idea being that I would get 'in shape' and perform better(!) and hopefully end up with a 'K' rating that is not too out of sync with (e.g.) my FIDE rating or my 'true' (TM) playing strength... (unfortunately, I have less games than Loz to do this with).

No time limit, but if there are 36 months of inactivity in that list then you start from scratch.

Tiviakov has previously had an ECF grade, but was treated as a new player for rating at the Cambridge Open, havimg not played a British event for some years. Would his dummy game have been a draw against an 1800 rated opponent?

from the calculation
Where a player has a higher lapsed full rating (categories A-E,K or X) from the applicable list, use that latest such rating or converted grade.
So the first game in the calculation of a returning player is a notional draw against himself or herself.
