Fred Stobbart

Those who played at the Durham Congress when it took place at Houghton-le-Spring will be familiar with Fred.
He was the organiser of the event and of the lunchtime sandwiches and often served the teas/coffees as well.
He will be remembered for his many years of service to DCCA.

Sad news about Fred.
Tribute on the Durham County Chess Association website www.dcca.org.uk
Although I didn't play at his Durham Congress, I spoke to Fred a number of times on the phone and he sent me a large number of Durham Chess Congress entry forms in the post, which I took to my club and a couple of tournaments that I played in.
Fred was a great organiser and although not the strongest of players, he regularly played in the congresses across the North East of England showing his support including:
Northumberland, Chester-le-Street, Forest Hall, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough. He played in the British Championships of 2012 when it was held in Newcastle.
Fred also enjoyed playing Rapidplay tournaments including:
Northumberland, Chillingham, Gosforth, Hartlepool, Peterlee and Darlington. In 2014 he played in the British Rapidplay Championships.
He regularly played for his club, Hetton Lyons in the Durham County Chess League.
A very pleasant gentleman who will be greatly missed.
RIP
