Chris Brown

Post by Chris Rice » Sun Aug 18, 2024 6:59 pm

Chris was a long time Lewisham Chess Club player from South East London and I knew him quite well in the 1990s. He was a solicitor and was 72 years old at the time of his death. Unfortunately, I was informed yesterday that a 34 year old woman, Habiba Naveed, has been charged with murdering him with blunt force trauma and she is on trial for that murder at the Old Bailey on Tuesday. To be honest I'm lost for words, Chris was a really nice guy and it's so tragic that he met his end in this way.

It's already on the main news sites but I don't think they knew he was a chess player. Here's a link to an article from the Independent

This is shocking news. I knew Chris very well during my time at Lewisham Chess Club and he came to my wedding in County Wexford in 1989.
Always dressed smart casual, in a slightly old fashioned way ( never saw him wear jeans), well educated and became a solicitor. He could come across as quite serious and formal to those who didnt know him, but once he relaxed, his humour came to the fore. He was always prepared to join teammates in the bar or pub after a match and was delighted to join the entourage of Lewisham players in attending weekend tournaments in the 1970s and 80s.
As a chess player, he had a very solid style. He never knowingly instigated fireworks on the board and was often happy to settle for a draw.
To my knowledge, he was a completely solid citizen so how he met his demise in this horrendous way is absolutely baffling.

A couple of posts were removed because of the ongoing murder trial. Let's keep that sort of post back for now while the case is resolved.

The women accused of the murder of Chris Brown (and his cat Snow) has pleaded guilty. That might not be the end of it though. More information here https://www.newsshopper.co.uk/news/2488 ... her-brown/
