I am very sad to report that well-known Kent chess player and organiser Tyrone Jefferies passed away this week after suffering a heart attack.

Tyrone was a character. He was made of pure Tyrone. One of those few people instantly recognised by his first name alone. In Kent he would volunteer for every job going whether or not he possessed the required skills. After Covid he captained both the 2050 and 1650 County teams in the same season. He was linked to various Clubs in Mid-Kent - his last project was to start a new hangout in Strood where he facilitated weekly rated blitz and rapidplay competitions. He also introduced friendly-rated games at the Greater London Chess Club in Bloomsbury which filled the venue. It’s true to say that his views were not always consistent with the chess establishment (or mine) but he never let that get in the way of a good friendship. Chess can hardly afford to lose people as enthusiastic and energetic as Tyrone. I imagine he’s already advising St Peter about the Pearly Gates opening.

Echoing the sentiments of David - Ty put his heart into chess - he did more than his fair share of organising and captaining, but was equally happy to do so.
One of our last personal email interactions was checking in and asking for running updates on a match score that meant both his teams achieved promotion.
Always had a friendly word and chat when we saw each other - RIP
