David White RIP

Post by Ian Cross » Sun Jul 12, 2026 12:13 am

David White of Hounslow and Greenford clubs sadly passed recently. He was a regular player for the Midddlesex county side and chaired the Thames League Valley for many years. We had a few lively games over the years, dating back to the 1980s. He was always prepared to analyse the game afterwards and share his thoughts. He will be missed by all his chess friends.

I have just received information telling me that David is very much alive.

I have a copy of an email he sent to his Thames Valley League colleagues earlier this evening.

"I am glad to let you know in the words of Mark Twain that rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated. I am not sure where this came from."

Admins: could you please delete this thread.

Well.....that could be a first for this forum!

(and exactly for that reason, perhaps we shouldn't delete the thread - but maybe amend the tittle!)

Just to confirm I am indeed still alive. Thanks for the kind words. It is somewhtt surreal to read your own obituary.

An unusual and much-coveted distinction. Congratulations!

This is some of the best news I have read in a while.

I'm very pleased to hear DW is alive and well. We worked together when TVCL adopted my LMS prior to the ECF taking such a thing seriously. :D

Excellent to hear this. If the thread is kept, the title should be amended as some people may not read the full thread. Whether David wants a framed copy of the thread...

Mea culpa

This is very embarrassing. A minutes silence was observed at the Herts and District league end of season Blitz last week. It may well be marking the passing of another individual with the same name was being observed. My humble apologies to David for any distress this may have caused.

A trawl of Facebook would suggest it is the David White of Welwyn Hatfield chess club who has passed.

At the risk of confusing things further (hopefully not a second mis-identification!), there is this page for the Welwyn Hatfield David White:

https://welwyn-pc.gov.uk/cllr-david-white/

"I am secretary for Welwyn Hatfield Chess Club".

Welwyn Hatfield is in Hertfordshire, so it would make sense that a silence was observed at the Herts and District league end of season Blitz last week.

If what Paul reports is true (no reason to doubt it), it seems the news has not yet spread beyond Facebook.
