GM Vereslav Eingorn (1956-2026)

This notably strong Soviet turned Ukrainian GM has passed away a few months short of his 70th birthday.

Made his mark as both a player and theoretician in the 1980s and 90s, before moving more into coaching where he also had some success.

RIP.

Sad news. He offered me a draw before our last round game in Bor 1985.. and since that sufficed for his GM title I, of course, agreed.

He was a very late entrant to the terrifically strong 1988 USSR championship, when Tal withdrew after a single round due to health issues. So not only did Eingorn have little time to prepare but he had to catch up on a game too, but still scored an extremely creditable 9.5 points out of 17.
