Richard GR Harris

Post by Stewart Reuben » Fri Feb 15, 2019 12:33 pm

RICHARD GR HARRIS born 29. 7. 1950 died 5. 2. 2019.

His last grade in 2009 was 152. He held a doctorate in Maths and taught at Hampton School 1974, where he ran the chess club, until his retirement in 2009. He was a member of Hampton CC 1975-1984 and then Kingston CC 1985-2009. He played many seasons in The Thames Valley and Surrey Leagues. He also played County Chess for Surrey. In addition he was a Bridge grandmaster. Unfortunately his health deteriorated after 2009 and he had to give up both sports.

RIP

That is a shame - I played him a couple of times in the 80s (and saw him thereafter) and he was a nice guy.

From the Hampshire and Isle of Wight County Bridge Association website:

Richard Harris, Hants player who lived in Teddington, died 5th Feb.
His eyesight became too poor to play 2014 and he moved to sheltered accommodation .
He had been very poorly for some time, and in November 2018 he moved to a nursing home in Poole, nearer his sister.
His funeral [was] in Poole, Thursday 14th Feb.

Sorry to learn of Richard's death. I concur completely with Alan Gregg's comments, as an ex-Hampton player and ex-Kingston player myself. David Mabbs.
