Although John Drew died last year and I doubt whether many people on here will have heard of him I thought I would mention his passing as not only was he Southampton League Treasurer for more than a decade, but he captained a mostly disabled team for longer than that and was usually responsible for driving the team to home and away matches which on occasions could involve a round trip of more than 50 miles. His team did not win many matches, but you could tell they really appreciated having the opportunity to play..

John's twin brother David who also recently died helped found the Ordnance Survey chess club which played in the Southampton Chess League for more than 40 years before they lost their playing venue. Probably the most well known player to represent this club was Marshall Thompson who was Hampshire Champion on several occasions, and played on a high board for the county's senior yeam
