I regret to inform you that former Scottish International Junior Director Paul MacDonald sadly passed away at 7.30pm on the 15th July at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Glasgow.
Until his illness, he was an active player and well known on the Congress circuit. He was also an arbiter.
There are a large number of tributes on the Scottish Chess Forum.
There is a picture of him and tribute on the Chess Scotland website.

I’m not alone in being sorry to have heard of this. I played alongside for Paul for a season in Edinburgh before he moved back west. I didn’t get to know him particularly well – I think he was a Celtic fan, but with a Liverpool accent.

He was always a friendly face on the circuit – I played him a handful of times – mostly Semi-Slavs - he was a solid player, tough to beat, but not one to take the game too seriously. He suffered serious illness but battled back to the board, which was universally welcomed, although was wheelchair bound the last time I saw him. He was one of those players for whom no-one had a bad word to say. My condolences to his friends and family.
