It was announced on the Cleveland Chess Association website, on 31st October 2019, that John Boyers had died after a long illness.
His funeral took place on Tuesday 12th November at the Oakwood Centre, Tees Valley Church, Eaglescliffe, County Durham.
John started playing chess when he attended Acklam Hall Grammar School in the 1950s. He came under the expert tutorage of Tom Wise, who besides being a Maths Tutor, was an English Chess Champion.
When John was at Chester Teacher Training College, he joined the local league and represented Cheshire County.
John later moved to the North East and was persuaded by his long time friend Ray Pallister, to join Middlesbrough Chess Club.
John's teammate and friend at Middlesbrough Chess Club, Ray Pallister, has done an excellent tribute on the Cleveland Chess Association website.
