That's a shame - I played him at Hastings in 1978. He was a nice guy. I seem to recall he once spent an inordinate amount of time (something like an hour and a half?) on one move in a later tournament.

"2 hours 20 minutes"
That was it. I assume it was in the days of 40 moves in 2.5 hours. In case anyone was wondering, his name is pronounced to rhyme with boys.

I can't challenge that. However, I did once spend 1hour 35 minutes on a game at Guernsey, The time limit then was 50 moves in 2½ hours.
The curious feature was that, even after my marathon think, I still had more time left than my opponent.

I did once take over an hour on one move, trying to find something which maintained equilibrium (or did nothing to be more accurate). Eventually I settled for a3, and the opponent thought for about 40 minutes in reply and did something similar.

Of course, you wouldn't have that long to think about an entire game these days!Richard Thursby wrote: ↑Fri Jan 15, 2021 12:54 amSee https://www.chessgames.com/player/francisco_trois.html

Is the entire score of the encounter in question available?

RIP Francisco.
I spent just over one hour on a move 2 times in my life. SOME of our dead friends more.
I thought we should not put cause or due to onto this thread.

Re: IM Francisco Trois 1946-2020
I remember Trois from Ramsgate 1982. Bojan Kurajica remarked to me, after he had seen me get wiped out by Nigel Short when I played the white side of a 4 a3 Queen´s Indian, "Today you played like a child". As he had played some stodge with black I retorted, "And you like an old man" "Right", he said. Trois was at our table and laughed at the interchange.
Since this obit has developed to long thinks, let me note that in a tournament in Lorca three or four years ago I played white in a Sicilian to win on time... at move fifteen.
My opponent was rated 2560.
