I am sorry to report the passing of Martyn Whiteside, he was born in 1947.
Martyn was originally from Yorkshire, in 1966, he moved to Aberystwyth, joining the University Chess team. He then played for Aberystwyth Chess Club in the Mid Wales Chess League.
Martyn also played for the club in the British Club Championships, led by George Butterill, playing matches against Oxford University and Lerwick (by phone).
Martyn also started the Aberystwyth Chess League for 3 man teams. At its peak, the Aber League had several divisions of ten teams each.
In 1982, Martyn tried to start a Commonwealth Chess Association.
Martyn then took up Correspondence Chess and played matches for BCCA and BPCF. He also played for Wales in the European Team Championships.
There is an excellent tribute by Martyn Griffiths on:

Quick additions to the above (annoyingly I don't think it is possible to link direct to sections on the Welsh CCF site).
This link may work better for the obituary by Martyn Griffiths:

And the correct spelling (apologies for the pedantry) is George Botterill (see here).

Re: Martyn Whiteside
His ICCF rating was 2514 in 1992 (i.e. not due to expensive computer), so he was a good player... Using the Sokolsky is interesting.

Re: Martyn Whiteside
He had not been involved with over-the-board chess for the past 30 years due to the banning of smoking in the 1980s. He carried on playing postal chess but gave that up when he became a single-parent father in 1996. He was a good player. Tim's losses to Martyn will be worth playing through.
I recall one other player leaving my club because of the ban.
I never played him but found the link when preparing for my opponent in GB/WH2021, C & DCCC 2021 Division 1 - Ward-Higgs.
