I am sorry to report that Barry Chambers has died at the age of 95.
Barry died on Thursday 21st January in hospital from Covid-19 a month before his 96th birthday.
During his lengthy chess career, Barry was a county chess player for Yorkshire and then Wiltshire before moving down to Hampshire.
In Hampshire, Barry was the founder chairman of Petersfield Chess Club.
Barry served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and was awarded the Burma Star for his efforts in the Far East. He was involved in the Burma landings in 1945.
In 1946, he gained an Honours Degree in History at Oriel College, Oxford.
He then trained as a teacher and taught children in Yorkshire and Wiltshire. He was the founding headteacher of Horndean School in Hampshire.
Barry was also a member of Petersfield Ramblers' Club from 1985 until his 89th year. He also served a stint as Chairman and Committee member.
He still played Table Tennis in Petersfield at 94.
There is an excellent Obituary and picture in the Portsmouth News on Friday 22nd January and updated Saturday 23rd January.
Worth a read.
