I am sorry to inform you that Peter Ballard of Rotherham Chess Club died on Sunday 16th May 2021, at the age of 77, after a long illness.
Peter played in the "Northern Open Championship" of the 1969 Whitby Congress from 28th July to 8th August, where he was recorded as living in Blackpool. As a result he became a Blackpool Football Club supporter until the present day.
In 1970, he played in the British Universities Chess Association Individual Championship, finishing in 12th place. It is believed he then moved to Sheffield.
He then played for the new club of BSC Stainless chess club in the Sheffield Works League. The club then changed it's name to BSC Tinsley and then Avesta.
Peter's grade reached 170 in 1972 and then climbed to 188 in 1973.
He won the Yorkshire Individual Championship in the 1977/78 Season and the 1978/79 Season. His grade then climbed to 194 that year.
He also won the Sheffield Championship in 1980.
Peter played for Rotherham Chess Club aswell, in 1975, Peter helped Rotherham win the British Lightning Championship.
He continued playing for Rotherham in the Yorkshire League and also the Sheffield & District League. He also played for the club online.
The passing of Peter was reported on the 20th May by Steve Mann on the Sheffield & District Chess Association website with an excellent tribute which is worth reading.
