IM Vladimir Karasev

I am sorry to report that Russian International Master and former Senior European Champion, Vladimir Karasev, died on 9th July 2021, at the age of 83.
Vladimir was born in Leningrad on 17th June 1938.
He became Champion of Leningrad in 1974 and won the Rubenstein Memorial.
In 1976, he was awarded the title of International Master.
Vladimir's highest ever rating came in 1977 with an Elo rating of 2515 and was 74th in the World.
He won the Russian Veterans Championship in 2001, 2002 and 2004.
Vladimir won the European Senior Championship in 2015.
At the World Senior Championship in 2018, Vladimir drew against our own International Master, Nigel Povah.

One of many strong Soviet players who would very likely have got the GM title had the opportunities to do so been more widespread then.

Kharitonov remarked to me once, re his cheeky usage of Nf3 AND simultaneously a, surreptitious g2-g3, "In my country, Grandmaster Karasev play only this, Blitz!"
