I am sorry to report that Italian International Arbiter and National Master Fiorentino Palmiotto died on the 1st August at the age of 92 in Molinella, Italy.
Fiorentino was born on the 9th April 1929 in Ravenna, Italy.
He was one of Italy's leading players between the 1950s and 1970s and was awarded the National Master Title in 1958 in the La Speiza tournament during his honeymoon.
In 1964, Fiorentino won the 16th Italian Correspondence Chess Championship. He also won the silver medal in 1962 and the bronze medal in the years 1961, 1967, 1971 and 1972.
Fiorentino won the Italian Blitz Championship in 1965 and in 1972 won the Italian Team Championship with Bologna.
He also played for Italy in a number of Chess Olympiads.
Fiorentino won the Italian Senior Championship in 1993, 1994 and 1995.
Fiorentino then became an International Arbiter in 1991.
There was a lengthy tribute paid on the Italian Chess Federation website in the Notizie section on the 1st August.
