I am sorry to report that Dr. (Sir) Tom Esmonde passed away on 24th July at the age of 60.
The funeral service took place in Belfast on Friday 30th July with a private cremation the following day.
Tom played for Lagan Chess Club and before that Civil Service Chess Club.
Tom was originally from Dublin, he graduated from Trinity College and became a consultant neurologist.
He was also a talented private pilot, enjoyed motorcycling and was a Baronet with title.
Two of his relatives were awarded the Victoria Cross.
There is an excellent tribute by Chris Kelly along with a photograph of Tom playing against Michael Holmes in the 2002-2003 UCU League on the Ulster Chess Union website.
