The sad news has been reported on the Essex Chess Association website that Geoffrey Smith has died at the age of 89.
Geoffrey played for Old Parkonians from the mid-1950s to 1963, then Brentwood 1963-1985.
He was elected a Life Member of the Essex Chess Association in recognition of his services over an extended period.
Geoffrey was ECA General Secretary from 1963 to 1973, when he took over as Chairman from 1973-1979, then President 1979-1984.
He took early retirement in 1985, when he moved to Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire.
