Adrian (Kelly) Riley 14th April 1945 - December 2022
We are very sorry to hear of the death of Kelly in December. Kelly was one of Oxfordshire's most well known chess players. He played for many clubs in the county, including Cowley, Oxford City, Cowley Workers and Blackbird Leys. He also played for the county and for the 4NCL teams and participated in many tournaments at Witney, Kidlington and elsewhere. Perhaps his best achievement was his win (as black) against International Master Gavin Wall.
Kelly was once a jockey, and is also a published poet!
Oxfordshire chess has lost one of its greatest characters.
Here is his win against Gavin Wall:

The game is a bit odd to show as a best achievement. Gavin Wall was winning and just blundered into a mate in 1.

Something similar happened to me the one time we crossed paths at Golders Green in 2008. He blocked a diagonal queen check with a pawn and I completely missed it was then attacking my queen.John Moore wrote: ↑Fri Apr 28, 2023 12:39 pmThe game is a bit odd to show as a best achievement. Oh just seen this. Used to see him at Paignton. He was a character. He used to watch a lot of my games. And I remember an intense game between him and shaddick that ended in a draw. A few heated exchanges and banging of the clock made for an interesting watch as I was on next table. Will miss him.
