Re: Alan Mealing
I don't often browse these pages so have only just noticed this post. Sorry to read this news about Alan, who I remember well from my early days in chess. I joined Chester YMCA (as the club was then known) in about 1970 as an aspiring junior. I was a team mate of Alan's in the Liverpool league-winning team of 1982, which the previous post mentions. Alan was a solid player rated around 150-160 in his prime, if memory serves. It was playing people like him that taught me experienced adult players were nowhere near as easy to beat as the juniors we used to play in inter-school matches. It made me a better player.
This brings back memories of matches in the rather magnificent clubroom in the faded but elegant Georgian YMCA building, which I believe has been an upmarket hotel/apartments for many years now. Simuls by the likes of Korchnoi, Vaganian, Adorjan in the aftermath of Hastings.
