The sad news has been reported that American FIDE Master Tibor Weinberger passed away on 28th August 2025, in Santa's Monica, California, USA.
Tibor was born in 1932 in Budapest, Hungary. He was granted asylum in the United States in 1956. He then achieved FIDE Master title and the US senior master title. His US rating was over 2400 in the 1970s.
Tibor also played in the US Championship in 1968 and won multiple California championships. He achieved multiple victories over Grandmasters.
Tibor also played Black against Bobby Fischer in 1957 in the North Central Open, in Milwaukee.
A slow move in the sharp Sicilian Dragon was enough for Bobby Fischer to take over and win.
RIP

Maybe his strongest international tournament was the (US) Cleveland event in 1975. He finished bottom with 3/15, but did not draw a single game and pulled off a notable swindle against GM Miguel Quinteros (which I recall in one of the 1980s Edmar Mednis pieces in CHESS magazine)
