Apparently he has, sadly, died.

"Chess grandmaster Svetozar Gligoric died Tuesday in Belgrade at the age of 88. As Secretary General of the Chess Federation of Serbia Zoran Pekovic told Tanjug, Gligoric died in the Belgrade Emergency Center of the consequences of stroke."

Sad news. Has anyone here read his autobiography I Play Against Pieces?

This is very sad. When I started to play, he was in the world's top ten and remained there or thereabouts for some years. You know that you are getting on when your chess (and other) heroes start to pass away.

I have a copy and read it a couple of years ago.

Re the above post, he was 89 not 88. Was the second oldest living GM (after Averbakh)

A remarkable man - fought for Tito's Partisans as a youngster and remained very physically active (eg playing football) to an astonishing age.

'Selected Chess Masterpieces' by Gligoric - the first chess book I truly loved.

Very sad to hear he has gone.

An RHP lad has just returned from Gligoric's funeral.

He said it was attended by the Serbian Prime Minister plus a few
surviving players from Gligoric's era and hundreds of chess lovers.
A brass band played American jazz.

Sadly today I was at Mark Sanderson's funeral which was held in Kirkcaldy
where a large selction of the Edinburgh club, approx 20 members and quite
a few junior players made the journey north.
Mark played us Pink Floyd.

Mark will be a great loss to the Edinburgh club and both are a sad loss to Chess.
