Eddie Pitt who was Southampton Chess League Secretary in the 1980's died on October 25th having been unwell for some time. His funeral will take place at 12.30 pm at Southampton Crematorium East Chapel in case anyone is interested.
Eddie took up chess after losing a leg on his first day of a new job restricted the number of sports he could play, but the game of chess meant a lot to him and he was instrumental in enabling both Customs and Eastleigh Working Men's club to play in the Southampton Chess League.
It is probably fair to say that Eddie's love of alcohol had an effect on his results, but he played county chess and for many years was graded above 120.
Many people liked Eddie and regarded him as one of the game's characters and having first met him in the 1970's I personally have many fond memories of him.
