Has apparently died.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I had heard that he was seriously ill with cancer, so I'm not surprised by the news.

Obituary in today's Times. On his involvement with chess it quotes him saying:

"I have always been a consumer of chess as an idea and an entertainment. I always liked the idea of alpha geeks roaming the earth striving to mortally crush their adversaries."

Here's a decent obituary which isn't behind a firewall.

An interesting, if irrelevant, new bit of information is the reference to his husband. He did well to prosper in some very socially conservative arenas.

I'd totally missed that when reading it, a good sign I think :) Doubly impressive to manage living in Russia of course.
