With great sadness we report that John Leake, St Albans Chess Club's most loyal and longest serving committee member of recent times, passed away on Friday 6th July at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital. He had been ill for some time.
John will be remembered as a friendly, hard working and capable administrator who never avoided a challenge. He had been an active committee member since joining St Albans Chess Club in the early 1970's. At various times he has held all the Club's principal posts - President, Secretary, Treasurer as well as team captain. He also held various posts on Hertfordshire Chess Association, including League Secretary and ECF National Club Controller.
John was held in high regard by all who met him.
The funeral will take place at 3.15 pm on Friday 20th July at The Vale Crematorium, Butterfield Green Road, Luton LU2 8DD.

Re: John Leake
I'm very sorry to hear this. I remember John well from my days as a junior in Hertfordshire chess a long time ago.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."
